Haskell has an opening for a Senior Civil Transportation Engineer, and a future peer describes how support and camaraderie promote a loyal team.
The job description for the Senior Civil Transportation Engineer opening with Benham, a Haskell Company, in its Tulsa, Oklahoma, office outlines the responsibilities and requirements of that position. They differ little from what you’d see from any engineering firm’s job posting.
But Jared Podolny does the job, and he describes what sets it apart.
“You can do engineering, anywhere. Engineering is math, science and numbers,” Podolny said. “The reasons to work here are No. 1, the type of engineering: We don't just get run-of-the-mill projects. We get to handle the big, complicated things, so every day is not the same. But the top reason to work here is not what you do, but who you do it with. The personnel, the staff and the consistency of the support system that we have is second to none.
“We are not here to just churn out projects and go home. We're here to care about each other and to make sure that everybody is fulfilled and grows, not only in their personal life but their career. And that's shown by the amount of longevity that we have within our employees.”
Podolny joined Benham 16 years ago, immediately upon graduation from Oklahoma State University, growing professionally to the point that he focuses on design review, mentoring and building up younger team members. The new Senior Engineer will do much the same. “As a senior, you're providing more oversight and mentorship rather than getting into the weeds on calculations,” he said.
The successful candidate will be responsible for the production of innovative, appropriate, cost-effective designs, drawings, and specifications for assigned projects. They will maintain professional registration and sign/seal documents prepared under their supervision.
Safety is a core tenet of Haskell’s operations, and while that most often equates to industry-leading safety records on construction job sites, it also extends to engineers’ work, Podolny said.
“In transportation, the No. 1 thing you need to focus on is safety,” he said. “We need to make sure our designs meet the level of safety that the traveling public almost doesn't know we exist. So, you have to make sure to impart that to the younger staff as they grow and start doing the designing themselves.
“For Haskell, the focus on safety, because of what we do, is all about our employees and our extended employees, our subcontractors, whereas in the transportation industry, the safety term is more in the general idea of the public. In the long-term end product, how is the public going to be safe based on what I do?”
All Haskell companies provide a highly collaborative environment and operate with the direction of six strategic pillars, the first of which is to “Provide Team Members the BEST Job of Their Lives.” It offers highly competitive pay, a robust benefits package that includes a 401k match and an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP), which creates stock ownership for every full-time team member.
