In late 2020, Dwight Garrels and his Haskell team walked into an empty 70-year-old warehouse. Eleven months later, they handed over to their client a fully operational facility with two production lines capable of turning out thousands of cans of seltzers and spirits-based cocktails per hour.

It was an unheard-of pace for a facility renovation and delivery of a major engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) project. It produced spectacular results and was named Haskell’s 2021 Engineering Co-Project of the Year.

The moral of the story is that if your process engineering position is mundane, you’re doing it at the wrong place.

Haskell currently has Project Engineer, Senior Engineer and Senior Designer openings on its Process team in St. Louis, Missouri, that offer a diverse, dynamic and rewarding opportunity for a talented and driven professional. Similar opportunities exist in other locations and remotely.

“It’s fast-paced. We're trying to help the client get to market as quickly as possible with their products,” said Garrels, Director of Process and Mechanical Engineering in Haskell’s Industrial Design Division. “They want to design and build their facilities rapidly, so you have to like that excitement and pressure”.

“A lot of our work is in food and beverage, which is exciting. We do a lot of breweries, distilleries, wineries, food production areas. So, it’s an exciting field just in general to work in. You're not working on acids or paint. You're working on stuff you talk with your neighbor about.”

Haskell is a trusted partner to numerous Fortune 100 companies and some of the world’s largest food and beverage producers. It has ranked as ENR’s No. 1 Food & Beverage Contractor in two of the past three years and is also the No. 1 Green Contractor in Food & Beverage, the No. 1 Green Contractor in Manufacturing & Industrial and the No. 1 Green Design Firm in Manufacturing & Industrial.

The successful candidates will be able to communicate well and work collaboratively with team members and clients. A positive attitude is a must, and the ability to make decisions based on 80 percent information and adjust on the fly will make all the difference.

The Project Engineer, Senior Engineer and Senior Designer will work side by side in collaboration on the engineering design and technical drawings for projects of all sizes across numerous industries, including food, beverage, consumer products, manufacturing and utilities. Both the Project Engineer and the Senior Engineer will complete the process and utilities engineering requirements such as the creation of Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), General Equipment Layouts, Specify Equipment, etc. The Senior Engineer will typically lead a team of engineers and be responsible for meeting the schedule, on time and on budget.

Once the Engineers have completed the design, the Senior Designer will be responsible for their team to create the 2D drawings and detailed 3D model to convey detailed information to contractors for construction. All three positions offer opportunities for leadership mentorship, support to pursue additional training advanced degrees, professional certifications and participation in professional organizations.

“Our job is helping the client put together the best way to make that product,” Garrels said.

In addition to providing a highly collaborative and fast-paced environment, Haskell operates with the direction of six strategic pillars, the first of which is to “Provide Team Members the BEST Job of Their Lives.” It offers a robust benefits package that includes a 401k match and an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP), which creates stock ownership for every full-time team member.

It also offers the opportunity to walk the grocery store aisles and feel a sense of connection to the processes that put products on the shelves and in the coolers.

“When you're working with a product that you use, whether it’s beer or potato chips or seltzers or dog food – there is a sense of pride that when you see it on the shelf,” Garrels said. “There is a good feeling that you can tell your neighbors and your friends, ‘I had something to do with that.’ It's like we talk about as a company: We make things that matter.”
