Haskell is seeking a Project Safety Coordinator who will work strategically and contribute to its culture of top-to-bottom safety success.
Haskell is seeking an experienced Project Safety Coordinator as it prepares to construct a massive greenfield facility for a global beverage company in the Kansas City metro area. But this is no one-and-done deal.
“We're not looking for someone who's looking for their next project or looking for a job. We're looking for someone who's looking for a career or a company,” said Chris Hooter, Corporate Safety Subject Matter Expert (SME) in Haskell’s Midwest Region. “When we go through the whole experience of hiring someone, we want them to become part of our team.”
Haskell is, by all measures, a leader in safety and has received the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) National Safety Pinnacle Award, the industry’s highest safety honor, in the past two years and three of the past four.
Statistically, Haskell is measured against the commercial construction industry based on Total Recordable Incident Rate (TRIR) compiled by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. In 2022, Haskell team members recorded a TRIR of 0.28 while executing more than 4.2 million manhours. This represents a performance that was the third-best in company history, 10 times better than the industry average.
Using its Work in Place (WIP) metric, which also includes contract partners, Haskell projects recorded more than 10.8 million manhours in 2022, a 52% increase over the past five years, for a WIP rate of 0.92, the lowest mark since tracking began in 2014 and a five-year improvement of 36%.
“We have an exceptional safety culture, not just in words, but in practice,” Hooter said. “When we say everyone on our project site is responsible for safety, that's what it comes down to. It is supported from the top, from (Chairman and CEO) Jim O'Leary on down. The first thing Jim O'Leary does when he gets on a project site is ask the superintendent, ‘How's your safety out here?’
“One of the reasons I'm with Haskell is because our safety manual is about as thick as a good bologna sandwich. It's not some four-inch-thick three-ring binder that bends the shelf when you set it down and is so filled with procedures, forms and programs that you never know if you're if you're following the rules or not. We work. We train. We teach. We coach. Our goal is to be an asset providing value and efficiency to our project teams. Our safety rules and procedures allow skilled craft to use their knowledge and experience to plan how they're going to do the job and work in a skills mode. We build trust and respect by participating in that process and assisting with hazard controls in effective and applicable ways.”
The position requires at least five years of experience. Because Haskell equips and prepares its team members to do their jobs, then lets them do it, the ideal candidate is someone who can view projects strategically. They will be expected to communicate with all levels of the project, from field laborers to the client representative.
In addition to providing a highly collaborative and fast-paced environment, Haskell operates with the direction of six strategic pillars, the first of which is to “Provide Team Members the BEST Job of Their Lives.” It offers a robust benefits package that includes a 401k match and an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP), which creates stock ownership for every full-time team member.
“If you're tired of being frustrated with the response you get from your corporate when it comes to safety, if you're tired of having just lip service paid when it comes to safety, then Haskell is a company for you,” Hooter said. “If you're looking for a company that is not going to just be your next project, but your career and your final home, this can be it.”
