Challenges, support, resources and camaraderie are among the advantages offered by the vital role.
From neighboring offices on the third floor of Haskell’s headquarters in Jacksonville, Florida, Mike Hoisington and Joe Kantor have spent the past several years working as Senior Project Managers in the Water Division.
Now, both have been promoted to Director of Project Development, and as Haskell actively recruits their replacements, both are strong advocates of the opportunities their recently opened positions present.
At Haskell, Senior PMs are experienced professionals and leaders who manage design-build, construction management or construct-only projects from project assignment through completion. They’re accountable for all construction activities on their projects. Successful candidates will have a bachelor’s in engineering, construction management or the equivalent and at least 10 years of experience in construction, design or management.
It’s likely they will be someone like Hoisington, who decided eight years ago to leave his previous employer to join Haskell as a project manager.
“It was time to move on, and Haskell was my No. 1 choice,” Hoisington said. “I had other opportunities, but I was attracted by the name of Haskell, the opportunity for advancement and the diversity of projects. There’s not only an opportunity to work in water and wastewater. There are also a lot of other markets to choose from – Aviation, Federal, Food & Beverage.”
Haskell, in fact, serves 16 different markets from more than 20 offices across the United States, as well as in Latin America and the Asia-Pacific region. An upcoming Industrial Water project will take Haskell team members to Jamaica.
“It’s sort of a case of what do you want to do and where do you want to do it,” Kantor said. “You can check a lot of boxes, and that is appealing to a lot of people. Do you want to be in Jacksonville? What about North Carolina? South Florida? How about Texas or out West?”
Kantor joined the company as an intern and, upon graduating from Virginia Tech, became an assistant project manager. He’s ascended the ranks, and his most recent promotion was his sixth in 15 years.
“The work is exciting,” he said. “We’ve got a variety of projects in a variety of areas that can keep things fresh. It’s all here. You have the resources to do your job. You have a support structure around you. You have great people above and below you that you can look to for differing ideas. Mike and I talk all the time about what’s going on in each other’s jobs.”
Haskell operates with the direction of six strategic pillars, the first of which is to “Provide Team Members the BEST Job of Their Lives.” It offers a robust benefits package that includes a 401k match and an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP), which creates stock ownership for every full-time team member.
As a pioneer in integrated project delivery, Haskell stresses constant collaboration with project owners and among the architecture, engineering and construction disciplines throughout each project. Senior project managers operate at the confluence of all parties and play an essential role in providing clients the greatest value and best experience possible.
“Our business is about building relationships,” Hoisington said. “We make certain that the people we hire will fit our culture of Team, Excellence, Service and Trust.”
