For new Haskell team members, understanding where they are and how they fit in a large and growing enterprise can be challenging. So, true to its status as the world’s best organization for educating and developing its team, Haskell has launched the Project Delivery Onboarding program.

The program brings newly hired Assistant Project Managers, Project Managers, Safety and Quality coordinators, Design and Consulting and Project Delivery professionals to the company’s Jacksonville, Florida, headquarters to learn the lay of the corporate land.

“We wanted to make sure that very early on not only did new team members hear from subject matter experts (SMEs) and leadership who drive each of the departments, but also meet other people in the organization,” said Heather Cole, Manager of Operations Support. “Networking is central to this program, along with an appreciation for what others in different roles do at Haskell.”

Led by the AEC Operations Training team of Cole, Stacey Barton, Matt Ford, Mike McLauchlan and Jacob Thurlow, the two-day program featured SMEs from various disciplines and various Haskell leaders. Both days focused on Haskell’s operations and how each individual fits in.

“We wanted them to come to headquarters, see where it all started and learn the culture right from the start,” Cole said. “Getting this information early on in their careers is beneficial for having an appreciation for what everyone here does.”

The agenda included essential onboarding items such as organization charts, office locations and an introduction to Haskell’s resources before broadening to more specialized topics, such as licenses and certifications, safety presentations, the availability of project services, such as Haskell Steel, and the Field-Focused initiative. The broad range of topics meant everyone heard something applicable to them while also learning different areas of the business.

“We really tried to touch on all of our services in the project lifecycle because everyone plays a part in how we fit together in the big picture,” Cole said.

The first Project Delivery Onboarding cohort comprised 16 new hires.

“I’m new to the AEC industry so I am slowly learning how it all works together,” said Connor McKee, an Electrical Design Associate and program participant. “Being here has helped me understand not only the industry better but also Haskell as a company. Coming to the office and getting to know everyone in person has been invaluable.”

Participants said they appreciated visiting the headquarters and that the program met and exceeded their training and mentor expectations.

“It is so nice to be able to put a face to a name,” said Andrew Buchanan, Structural Design Associate. “In this industry, a lot of what we do is through video calls, which still allows you to talk with others, but it’s different in person. Knowing the person’s face and not just their name helps when making a connection.”
