Just as a heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system’s ductwork is interwoven in any industrial facility, Haskell’s mechanical engineering team extends its influence to virtually every aspect of facility design. As the company and its workforce grow, Haskell is expanding that team with Senior Mechanical Engineer – HVAC openings in St. Louis, Missouri.

“We work with the architects as far as what installation types are used in the building, what types of windows to use, whether there are external shading devices on the building to shade the windows,” said Al Ketterer, Lead Mechanical Engineer in the Industrial Design Division in St. Louis. “Electrically, the HVAC engineer is determining what the overall energy consumption of the mechanical systems will be. We work with the civil engineer on how the building gets situated on the property and what orientation is best.

“We help work out how the utilities are going to be provided to the building, whether the building is going to use natural gas or electricity, whether it’s going to have a geothermal system. So, even though mechanical engineering is just a part of the overall design, we really interact with all the disciplines to see that the fully integrated design consumes the least amount of energy possible.”

Ketterer’s team designs both HVAC and plumbing, so while he is seeking an engineer primarily experienced in HVAC design, plumbing design is advantageous. The positions’ senior designation means that the job description calls for a registered engineer with 10 years of experience, but he said Haskell would be open to suitable applicants who have less work history and are still pursuing registration.

Just as Haskell’s mechanical team works vertically with the design disciplines, it works horizontally across different types of engagements. The company is recognized as a pioneer in integrated delivery and specializes in taking projects from concept to commissioning, but it also creates facility designs that are put out for construction bids and takes on smaller engagements such as performing lifecycle cost analyses of the mechanical systems. Similarly, it can cross markets, applying its services to support Haskell’s process systems division.

There also is a substantial sustainability aspect to the position. Ketterer is LEED-certified, making him one of 130 in-house sustainability-accredited professionals among Haskell’s 1,600-plus team members.

“It’s a rewarding position,” Ketterer said. “It’s a great position for an engineer who has an interest in thermal systems, but it also has a capability to branch off and support our process group and utility design as well. We do all the mechanical systems to support facility design, and they do a lot of the same systems to support process. So, there’s a lot of crossover and a lot of flexibility.”

In addition to providing a highly collaborative and fast-paced environment, Haskell operates with the direction of six strategic pillars, the first of which is to “Provide Team Members the BEST Job of Their Lives.” It offers a robust benefits package that includes a 401k match and an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP), which creates stock ownership for every full-time team member.
