Whether it’s a three-level metropolitan interchange or a new shoulder on a rural state highway, the Oklahoma Department of Transportation (ODOT) regularly turns to Benham, a Haskell Company, for its civil engineering work.

Now, with an opening for a Civil (Roadway) Project Engineer, Benham, a Haskell Company, is offering an opportunity to join one of Oklahoma’s best workplaces and help design Oklahoma’s biggest transportation projects.

Founded in 1909, Benham offers expertise in transportation; food and beverage manufacturing; consumer products manufacturing; and the federal government market. In this case, it’s looking for a road designer, said Shannon Koeninger, Director of Civil Infrastructure.

“What we're looking for is someone with five-plus years of experience,” Koeninger said. “Civil engineering is very broad, but what we're looking for specifically is someone that's interested in transportation (roadway) design with ODOT experience.”

With offices in Tulsa and Oklahoma City, Haskell earned recognition as one of The Oklahoman’s 2020 Top Workplaces in Oklahoma, based on employee feedback to the newspaper’s survey of more than 34,000 employees across the state. Based on the combined entry of its Oklahoma City and Tulsa offices, Haskell ranked No. 4 in the mid-sized category, which ranged from 125 to 349 employees. In all, 76 companies received recognition.

“We have a really good environment,” Koeninger said. “We have a lot of longevity here, and I really think that what makes us successful in this office is our relationships. We have a good understanding of what everyone's role is and how they contribute to a project, and we work really well together. We’re fairly flexible in our office environment, which is consistent across Haskell.”

Consistently, Benham has designed many of ODOT’s large infrastructure projects, including the award-winning I-235 Broadway Widening in Oklahoma City, which was the largest construction package in the department’s history, and the ongoing three-level I-44/US-75 interchange project in Tulsa.

“We get the opportunity to work on bigger projects for ODOT,” she said. “I think that’s a draw for young engineers to come work here.”

Amid the high-profile engagements, Benham also performs a steady diet of meat-and-potatoes projects that enhance public safety.

“Safety improvements are a big focus for Oklahoma right now,” Koeninger said. “Over the past 20 years, we had a really large focus on our bridge program, replacing a lot of our structurally deficient bridges as a state. Benham participated in a lot of those, and Oklahoma was actually able to flip from the Bottom 10 states to a Top 10 state in the percent of bridges having adequate structural capacity. Now that we have the bridge system under control, we’re moving to safety improvement, so a lot of the projects coming from this state are safety-related, like adding paved shoulders and widening highways.”

The successful candidate will join a group of more than 20 engineers in the Tulsa office and more than 600 throughout Haskell’s 20-plus locations in the United States, Latin America and the Asia-Pacific region.

In addition to providing a highly collaborative and fast-paced environment, Haskell operates with the direction of six strategic pillars, the first of which is to “Provide Team Members the BEST Job of Their Lives.” It offers a robust benefits package that includes a 401k match and an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP), which creates stock ownership for every full-time team member.
