Manufacturing Systems Superintendents are a rare breed, and Haskell is working to assemble and create the breed’s next generation.

Like construction superintendents, Manufacturing Systems Superintendents are responsible for short-term planning, day-to-day operations, subcontractor oversight and safety on the job site. But their work doesn’t begin until the building is built. Call them the finish carpenter of manufacturing facility construction and commissioning.

“It comes with the wherewithal of doing machine and conveyor installation,” said Jeremy Triplett, Haskell’s Chief Packaging Systems Integrator. “There’s a significant technical aspect to it.”

Haskell is known in the Architectural, Engineering and Construction industry as a pioneer in the design-build delivery of industrial, commercial and governmental projects. But its expertise extends onto the production floor, where it also specializes in single-sourced engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) services and, ultimately, delivery of turnkey facilities.

Ranked No. 1 by Engineering News-Record among Food & Beverage contractors in 2020, Haskell is a trusted partner to many of the world’s best-known brands in delivering food and beverage and consumer packaged goods production, packaging and distribution solutions.

“That’s the equipment that the customer is going to operate to make product and earn money for years to come. It has to be right, it has to be straight, it has to be plumbed, it has to be level, and it has to run correctly."

Triplett and his engineering peers specialize in designing production lines and integrating the proper equipment centers from original equipment manufacturers (OEM) to ensure their clients’ optimal performance. It’s in the installation phase that the Manufacturing Systems Superintendent takes the baton, leading subcontractors and site operations while continuously overseeing safety and quality.

"That's a tall ask, but that’s just because of the scale and scope and cost associated with installing these lines, it almost has to be that way,” Triplett said. “We ask a lot of this role, and right now we’re looking forward to some of our more experienced folks training the next generation.”

Their work goes beyond greenfield projects. Haskell’s manufacturing experts also analyze and optimize existing lines, which often means that their teams work in functioning facilities. In such cases, the superintendent coordinates with ongoing operations to minimize disturbances while modifying existing systems.

As an employee-owned company with an ownership culture, Haskell team members work to benefit clients and each other, guided by the core values of Team, Excellence Service and Trust. Strategically, Haskell operates with the direction of six strategic pillars, the first of which is to “Provide Team Members the BEST Job of Their Lives,” manifests in a robust benefits package that includes a 401k match and an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP), which creates stock ownership for every full-time team member.

Millwrights, electricians, precision pipefitters and those with a military background could be prime candidates. Drive, inquisitiveness, construction and mechanical savvy, and a sense of ownership are ideal characteristics.

"When it comes to the technical part,” Triplett said. “the people who do well in this business, whether it’s the engineers or the construction people, are people who work on cars or remodel their kitchen on their own or build a play set for their kids -- but not put it together from Ikea, build something that they envision, draw out, build and execute.”
