Fairfield Memorial Hospital

Fairfield, Illinois

Haskell helps a rural community hospital expand to meet the growing need for healthcare.

Fairfield Memorial Hospital opened in 1950 in the rural Illinois community with 84 beds. Over time, as its service area expanded, this critical-access facility needed new specialized units and additional hospital beds to accommodate the community’s growing population. Haskell and Fairfield Memorial Hospital began collaborating in 2020 to add 56,218 square feet of expanded area (10,000 in backfill renovation and 46,218 in three new stories to the building). Haskell brought to the project its design-build expertise and a history of catering to specialized healthcare requirements.

A flexible design ensures maximum utility of shared spaces by multiple specialties.

Haskell’s project team prioritized transparency and collaboration with Fairfield Memorial Hospital. Haskell’s mechanical engineering team stabilized the structure with steel frames, drilled piers, and a seismic zone to guarantee the structure’s longevity. An exterior air barrier system was designed and installed to help control air quality while conserving energy. Haskell executed all of this in an environmentally sustainable manner.

The design of the addition allows multiple specialties to utilize the areas, a necessity in smaller rural hospitals:

  • The first floor houses a new Emergency Department with an urgent care center, a central sterile supply department, and two new operating rooms. The emergency department was increased to eight beds, two of which are adapted toward the treatment of behavioral health patients.
  • The second floor houses 32 exam rooms and offices.
  • The third floor contains room for 30 additional beds.

Haskell delivers new structures; new structures provide economic growth.

The expansion required 80 new jobs, over $6 million in extra payroll and almost $7 million in additional medical-related supplies. New surgical specialties are now performed in the additional offices and operating rooms, allowing more patients to be treated closer to home. Haskell was honored to be part of creating the Surgical Pavilion for Fairfield Memorial and proud of how the project positively affected the local economy and the well-being of an entire community.

  • Three-story addition and renovation to accommodate a new clinic space, emergency department, and bed space for patients.
  • $23.3 million, 56,218 SF project.
  • Created 80 new jobs and over $6 million in additional payroll.
  • Steel frames, drilled piers, and a seismic zone provided stability and ensured longevity for the space.
  • With collaboration from the client, urgent care services were relocated to the emergency department for maximum operational efficiency.
