Catawba Valley Medical Center Pavilion

Hickory, North Carolina

The right type of space for our patients.

Modern amenities for improved patient experience.

As a significant component of our master plan implementation, the new Women’s and Children’s Services space mitigates the challenges presented by undersized and antiquated women’s and pediatric units with limited staff and family support space. With a dedicated entrance and a range of patient and family amenities, the new Women’s Center features easily accessible first-floor triage and a dedicated elevator directly to the inpatient unit. The obstetrical unit contains 18 new labor and delivery suites with outboard patient toilets and tubs to assist in delivery. The project also features a new dedicated C-section suite and associated prep/recovery unit.

Neonatal and pediatric services are essential to CVMC’s community service offerings, and a new Special Care Nursery (SCN) contains 20 level II and III bassinets. These range from open, to semi enclosed, to private patient rooms to accommodate varying acuity levels. Family amenities include overnight parent accommodations, boding room, and family washer and dryer. A loop configuration maximizes staff visibility to patients for safety and quality of care purposes.

Historically, CVMC’s pediatric and GYN units shared staff, patient rooms, and support space. Haskell’s master plan recommended reconsidering mixing patient populations to improve patient satisfaction, and the development of the new pavilion allowed for renovation of existing space for pediatrics, well baby nursery, GYN patients, and ante-partum services.
