Home / News & Insights / ‘Loving and Caring,’ ‘Momma Cheryl’ Earns Living the Values Award
On a hot early June day in Jamaica, Cheryl Shriver was focused on anything she could do to help Haskell team members and contract partners push Project Campari in Clarendon, Jamaica, to completion.
Yes, a month-long European vacation with her husband, Chris, was on the horizon when the work was complete in mid-July. But Cheryl would be doing the same thing anyway, which is why she received Haskell’s Living the Values Award.
“The Campari project in Jamaica can be a difficult working environment,” wrote Richard Moore, Director of Construction, and Matt Gulden, Vice President of Construction, in nominating her. “She [Shriver] motivates the subcontract partners by rewarding them with popsicles, candy and various sweets. In doing this, she has transformed the site into one of our cleanest and safest Haskell projects.
“Cheryl is not afraid to hold others accountable while leading by example. If a work area is not clean, she’ll start cleaning and the crews will quickly say, ‘Ms. Cheryl, we will take care of that.’ Even then, her response will be, ‘Well, come on help me, and we’ll get it done faster.’ Cheryl is a supportive, understanding person – someone who stands behind you, in front of you, and pushes and pulls you to be the best you can be. If you ever have a frown on your face, she will notice and comfort you to see if she can make you feel better. She is the most loving and caring person you will ever meet.”
That dedication has been nonstop for the Shrivers over the past two-plus years, working side by side. Chris was hired in December 2022 for a project in Idaho. When that was completed, they had 10 days to pack at their Lake Jackson, Texas, home to transition to Jamaica, where Chris is the Manager of Field Operations for the construction of a large evaporator for J. Wray & Nephew Limited (JWN), the leading spirits manufacturer in the region.
They endured a Category 5 Hurricane Beryl in July 2024, staying on the island to ensure the job site was secure, even though their Texas home was at risk from the storm’s path. Chris was named a Living the Values recipient in early 2025, just before Cheryl was honored for her administrative and safety skills alongside her giving character.
After the European trip, the duo is likely bound for a project in Virginia. No matter where they go, Cheryl, with the title of Jobsite Clerk, will live by the moniker “Momma Cheryl.”
“I got that nickname from kids we worked with in Idaho,” Shriver said. “They would come in and need a band-aid, an Advil, always wanted candy and would ask for me for all of it. That’s when they started calling me Momma Cheryl. Here in Jamaica, it’s a lot different, but still they call me that. A lot of the folks from Jamaica on the job site don’t have much. And I don’t like to see that. We’re grateful for what we have. If I can help somebody out, so be it.”
As for the Living the Values award, she felt honored but felt there wasn’t any extra effort since that’s always the mantra for Haskell and the Shrivers.
“Yes, I was surprised,” Shriver said. “I don’t feel I did anything extraordinary that deserves the award. I’m doing what I like to do with a group of really supportive, family-oriented people.”
