Unprecedented use of virtual construction technology drove the iconic project to completion with extraordinary speed and a supreme level of quality.
Norwegian Cruise Line’s iconic Cruise Terminal B at PortMiami has received another distinction, emerging from a group of 16 ENR Southeast Best Projects to be one of four finalists for the top regional honor of 2021 Project of the Year.
Constructed through a joint venture between NV2A and Haskell, the 189,730-square-foot (SF) cruise terminal, which will earn LEED® Gold designation, consists of 8,221 tons of structural steel with a façade of more than 110,000 SF of curtainwall glazing. Completed on an active cruise ship active berth and requiring coordination among 12 different permitting agencies, the project also includes a 340,730 SF parking garage and 16,297 SF warehouse.
Although the project was delivered under a construction management at-risk contract (CMAR), the JV created “design-assist” packages for design and scope management that brought an over-budget concept into operational parameters. Design progressed from simple renderings to permit drawings within three months and advanced as a guaranteed maximum price (GMP) was developed.
Unprecedented use of virtual construction technology drove the project to completion with extraordinary speed and a supreme level of quality.
In August, ENR Southeast selected Cruise Terminal B as the Best Project in the Airport/Transit division, one of 16 Best Projects and 35 overall projects deemed worthy of recognition. It emerged from those 16 Best Projects along with the Durham County Public Library, Raleigh, North Carolina (Best Government/Public Building); the COVID-19 Alternate Care Facility, St. Croix Virgin Islands (Best Health Care); and the Atlanta Water Supply Program, Atlanta, Georgia (Best Water/Environmental) to form the field of finalists.
Cruise Terminal B also has been honored as an Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) Florida First Coast Chapter Eagle Award winner.
The winner of ENR Project of the Year honors will be announced at this year's ENR Southeast Best Projects Awards celebration, scheduled to be held November 4 in Orlando, Florida.
