Haskell made extensive use of building information modeling to prevent clashes in the design and construction of the three-story tilt-up structure.
Designed and built by Haskell on a five-acre campus in San Antonio, Florida, using the latest in construction and sustainable advances, the Phillips & Jordan Southeast Regional Office Complex has received the 2022 Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA) Florida Region Honor Award in the Commercial/Office - Mixed-use category.
Phillips & Jordan is a national woman-owned, heavy civil/infrastructure contractor headquartered in Knoxville, Tennessee. In November 2019, Haskell was contracted to design and build Phillips & Jordan’s new Southeast regional headquarters. Haskell provided various design-build services, including civil, landscape, architectural, interior and fire-protection design, and structural, mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) engineering.
The three-story, 50,000-square-foot building features a brick-inlaid tilt-up concrete exterior wall with steel interior framing. Haskell self-performed 100% of the building’s concrete work, including tilt-up walls. Phillips & Jordan occupies the second and third floors, offering tenant space on the first.
The building includes integrated HVAC controls and a lighting control system. Construction work also included utilities, 192 parking spaces and covered outdoor seating.
Haskell employed more than 30 subcontractors on the project through a vendor selection process that was transparent for subcontractors, vendors and the owner. Haskell used Building Information Modeling to create tilt-up panel layout drawings, loading the model was loaded with all the MEP coordination items and form liners and thin brick, reinforcing steel, steel embeds, lifting and bracing inserts, panel-to-panel embeds and other miscellaneous items cast into tilt-up panels. These items were thus coordinated in advance to clear any clashes or conflicts, then printed on a single layout sheet with dimensions for each panel so field crews could easily see all the different elements coordinated.
The structure features Smart Windows with an electrochromic coating inside the insulating glass unit to control glare and automatically or manually optimize daylight with four tint levels.
Design-build delivery ensures project owners a single point of contact, budget and schedule certainty, increased value and reduced risk, and Haskell is a pioneer in the method. Contact our team to discuss your next facility.
