NCCER wanted its headquarters to reflect its mission.

As an organization that advocates construction best practices, NCCER, created in 1996 as The National Center for Construction Education and Research, based planning for its new headquarters on a desire to lead by example. The organization sought a project partner whose everyday business practices reflected the goals of NCCER itself. Based upon proven results, expertise, safety record and commitment to quality, Haskell emerged as the right firm for the job.

As part of showcasing construction best practices through its new headquarters, NCCER felt a responsibility to emphasize sustainable construction. From use of day-lighting to an energy efficient cooling tower, lighting motion sensors and a high-efficiency plumbing design that reduces water usage, Haskell’s innovative approach delivered a modern design with truly sustainable systems.

NCCER exemplifies an inspired concept translated into a practical result.

The two-story 33,455-square-foot NCCER headquarters features a contemporary design with a glass facade that houses several office suites and five conference rooms with high-tech multimedia capabilities for training. The open floor plan and exposed ceilings lend the space an industrial feel, and a unique educational “craft tour” highlights the crafts on the project. Haskell takes pride in not only delivering a well-built physical structure, but also in the fact that we contributed to support NCCER’s overall goals.

  • A central two-story space with clerestory windows to bring more natural light into the lobby
  • Minimal openings in the rear of the building due to its southwest exposure. This was achieved by placing service areas that do not require daylighting at that location (to reduce HVAC loads)
  • Building located to meet not just our Client’s need of visibility, but also to provide a more favorable solar orientation than facing due east
  • 75% of construction waste was recycled
  • 32% of building materials came from recycled sources
  • 53% was produced regionally, resulting in an exemplary performance point (Innovation Point)
  • 58% of wood-based materials and products were certified in accordance with Forest Stewardship Council’s (FSC) principles and criteria
