BIM Leader Leo Dino Buera Honored with Living the Values Award
Explore how Buera has helped build Haskell Philippines, playing a collaborative role and successfully coordinating global BIM integration initiatives.
Leo Dino Buera, a Filipino native and Haskell Building Information Modeling (BIM) Integration Manager in the Philippines, recalls his fascination with the skyscrapers he saw as a child visiting Saudi Arabia and Dubai.
“I was interested in how they were able to start from nothing and build such a building,” Buera said. “Now, I am fortunate that in my generation we are able to develop the technology to show the building in place before it’s built. That’s why I trained myself to learn the software and the 3D modeling that make it cool to see the building before it exists.”
BIM is a process used in the architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) industries that enables design and construction teams to create a virtual model of a project. Such models help create a detailed path to plan, design and build with better coordination, enhanced clash detection and greater efficiency.
One of Buera’s recent projects, a new temple for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Philippines, provides a vivid example.
“The intricacy and quality that is aspired to produce is very much at the top level,” he said. “There’s no room for a mistake, so we can model the details and then replicate them on site.”
In his seventh year with Haskell, Buera recently received the company’s Living the Values award, given to team members who exemplify Haskell’s core values of Team, Excellence, Service and Trust.
“Leo exemplifies Haskell’s values through his supportive leadership, professionalism, and integrity,” Senior Human Relations Manager Leilannie Salvani wrote in nominating him for the honor. “As a pioneering member of Haskell Philippines, he has played a key role in building the department’s foundation and strengthening collaboration across the APAC Region, particularly through his successful coordination with the Mexico Team on global BIM integration initiatives.
“He leads with empathy, transparency and respect—creating a culture of collaboration and open communication where team members feel valued, motivated and empowered to perform their best. His calmness under pressure and positive attitude consistently inspire confidence and unity within the team.”
The award gave Buera an extra boost of motivation, but not just for himself.
“I think I need to be a role model within my (11-person) team,” he said. “I hope I can teach or impart these qualities to others.”
In that way, he aspires to model the way Haskell’s leaders interact when they visit and interact with team members.
“Our leaders at Haskell are very supportive,” Buera said. “On a yearly basis, the Executive Leadership Team always finds time to visit us way over here in the Philippines. They always ask what they can do to support us. I found out that the leadership team is not really that different than we are, so I felt very comfortable just talking with them about various tasks. That’s really cool to have those types of leadership engagements.”
