Haskell again teamed with NCCER to create, administer and judge the Carpentry competition at the massive Career and Technical Education event.
Career and Technical Education (CTE) is a vital source of Haskell’s workforce, and many in the company devote their time and talent to supporting programs on the local, state and national levels.
For the 13th consecutive year, Haskell team members, in conjunction with the National Center for Construction Education and Research, designed and administered the Carpentry competition at the SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta.
SkillsUSA is a nonprofit national education association serving middle-school, high-school and college/postsecondary students preparing for careers in trade, technical and skilled-service occupations. The SkillsUSA Championships brought nearly 6,500 state champions in more than 100 trade, technical and leadership competitions.
David Bates, Vice President of Construction Core, served as Technical Chair for the Carpentry competition for the sixth year. Bates, Tim Mosley, Senior Manager of Field Personnel, Craft Development Specialist Mike Osborne and former Haskell Superintendent Garrett Thompson created the concept – a scale of a residential house requiring wall framing, roof framing, steel stud framing and exterior trim work – and Virtual Construction Specialist Sidhesh More created the drawings and model.
The 67 contestants had eight hours to build the projects, which were judged by a group of industry leaders who looked at the quality of the project, the adherence to the drawings and safety.
“It’s amazing to see this much talent in one place,” Mosley said. “This event lets us network with other industry leaders as well as recruit talent.”
