Explore how this construction leader balances the demands of large projects with the values of teamwork, problem-solving and personal growth.
Greg Freel loves the outdoors, whether hiking, hunting, snowboarding, deep-sea fishing or working on Haskell projects.
Freel grew up in Jacksonville, Florida, graduated from Bishop Kenny High School and earned a civil engineering degree from Florida State University. He started with Haskell in 2020
“I’ve been to a lot of places in 5 years – Colorado, California, Puerto Rico,” Freel said. “I’ve loved everywhere Haskell has sent me, all projects I’ve built and relationships I’ve made. It’s made me more well-rounded as a team member as I go the superintendent route.”
On his first Haskell job, a Coors expansion in Colorado, Freel said he worked with many longtime employees who taught him core fundamentals and organizational skills. From there, he moved to Sacramento to work on a small project installing a cooling tower in an existing plant.
“There was no superintendent on site, so I was the lead guy,” Freel said. “It was a good experience having full responsibility.”
His first project as a Superintendent was in Puerto Rico and was a more challenging job with lots of problem-solving. He’s now back in Colorado as a project superintendent on a new process and distribution warehouse on a 150-acre greenfield site.
“We’re a huge team — 40 Haskell people,” he said. “The work we do in a fast-paced design-build atmosphere is never boring. Everyone is awesome. We put our heads together, solve a problem, and think ahead.”
Project Manager Gio Ormaeche works with Freel daily.
“He’s a great communicator,” Ormaeche said. “He likes to facilitate work and involve everyone in the team. He loves to coordinate and plan ahead. He’s calm, patient and passionate about what he does.”
Sean Higgins, Director of Project Management, said Freel has developed a good reputation in the company. And as one of the company’s younger field leaders, he brings a different perspective to the job.
“He is not afraid to explore other details and understand the true challenges,” Higgins said. “He wants to solve them, even if it means doing a lot of upfront planning and legwork. “He’s relatable to everyone on the team, and not everyone is on a construction site. That makes him unique.”
Ormaeche said Freel is down-to-earth, the kind of guy you enjoy working work with and grabbing a beer with at the end of the day.
Freel is single and is accompanied on his travels by Remington, “Remi,” a chocolate Labrador. They used to hunt and camp together, but Remi has now retired.
Freel spends his free time with his family, which includes his parents, twin sister and younger sister. His family attends St. Joseph Catholic Church, and three generations have attended the parish school, where his mother is a teacher’s aide.
“My family and my faith are a huge part of my life,” Freel said. “They taught me a lot of my values. I love building things while working with people.”
