Home / News & Insights / Daily Sketches Help Power this Architect’s Passion for Lasting Impact
Architecture is a profession and a passion for Geoff Parker. A lifelong resident of the Oklahoma City area, he also considers it part of his heritage as he helps shape his community through thoughtful design while honoring the legacy of his father, a retired architect.
Parker earned his master’s degree in architecture from the University of Oklahoma, and spent most of his career in small to mid-sized design firms, contributing to large planning projects. Since joining Benham, a Haskell Company, in June 2023, he has contributed to multidisciplinary project development.
Early in his career, Parker worked with award-winning architect Hans Butzer on high-profile master planning projects. From 2007 to 2014, he served as an adjunct professor at his alma mater, teaching first- and second-year architecture students the principles of graphics and design.
Sketching is central to his identity. Influenced by cartooning icons from Mad Magazine and inspired by his father's hand-drawn blueprints, Parker’s dedication intensified during an advanced graphics class led by Professor Moh’d Bilbeisi. A required fountain pen and sketchbook assignment sparked what has since become a daily discipline and signature skill.
Parker hopes to leave a legacy of creativity, mentorship and meaningful design. Whether in the form of buildings, student growth or inspiration passed to peers, he views architecture as a lasting imprint on the world.
Haskell.com sat down with Parker to learn more about his story, his inspirations and what being a Haskell team member means to him.
I grew up watching my dad, an architect, but the industry struggled when I was young, especially where I grew up in Oklahoma. I was on the fence about architecture, so I told people I wanted to be a cartoonist and started college undeclared. Then one night, after watching the TV Show “Housesitter,” I realized I was passionate about architecture. That same night, I told my dad I was enrolling in the College of Architecture at OU, and he said, “I was wondering what you were waiting for.” Somehow, he had always known.
New York City. It’s like nowhere else – the architecture, the energy, the feel of it all. It’s got an energy that you must be physically there to experience. My dream destination that I’ve never been to is Italy. I’d burn through a lot of ink sketching the scenery there.
Doing at least one sketch.
My dad and grandpa taught me about integrity, hard work and family. Professionally, Moh’d Bilbeisi sparked my passion for graphics and design, and Hans Butzer was a great mentor and pushed me to be more rigorous. Butzer introduced me to teaching, which was a key period of growth for me.
I really did not know what to expect coming into such a large AEC company after spending my entire career in small architectural firms. I can say that being a Haskell team member has been a great experience. I have met and been exposed to so many talented and passionate people. I am amazed every day at how much talent and expertise surround me.
