Read how the professional journey of Haskell's Chief Engineer from intern to industry leader now includes chairing the state's governing board.
Just two months after celebrating her 40th anniversary as an engineer at Haskell, Denise Ramsey, the company’s Chief Engineer and Vice President of AE Business Processes, has been reappointed to the Florida Board of Professional Engineers (FBPE) and elected its Chair.
Ramsey served as Vice Chair in 2024, has been a FBPE member since 2021 and was reappointed to a four-year term by Governor Ron DeSantis.
“I’m certainly very honored to have the ability to give back to the profession and all the licensees in the state of Florida,” she said. “It's quite an honor to have been elected by my peers on the board to serve in that role.”
Also serving as Haskell’s Chief of Design Project Management, Ramsey has spent her storied career with the company, starting as a mechanical engineer intern. She has a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering from the University of South Florida and a Master of Business Administration from Jacksonville University.
She is licensed as a PE in 45 states, is a LEED AP BD+C, showing her commitment to sustainability, is a Designated Design-Build Professional serving that organization on the National Certification Board, and is a member of the American Society of Heating Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) and the Florida Engineering Society (FES).
“If you think about operational excellence, Denise should come to your mind because she is always looking for ways that we can improve our processes,” said Frank Mangin, Design & Consulting Operations President. “She’s served in many different roles, and she's taken on every one with excellence. I can’t say enough about Denise and what she means to the company.”
Florida ranks third in the country behind California and Texas, with nearly 44,000 Professional Engineers licensed in the state. The Florida Board of Professional Engineers comprises 11 members – nine licensed engineers and two laypeople, all appointed to four-year terms by the governor – and regulates engineering practice. It reviews applications, administers exams, licenses qualified applicants and regulates and enforces proper practices.
Ramsey said she anticipated that the FBPE would dedicate significant effort in the coming year to adapting its rules to comply with the Florida Legislature’s recent moves regarding interstate mobility, easing the path to licensure for those moving to the state. Also, she said the body may look to proactively streamline some of its own regulatory practices.
“With the multiple hurricanes having affected our state in 2024, the board will evaluate whether rules are needed to standardize reports on damaged buildings,” she said.
Ramsey’s involvement in the engineering community extends beyond her board work. Passionate about mentoring young people, she founded the ACE (Architecture, Construction and Engineering) Mentor Program of Northeast Florida in 2006 and remains an active volunteer.
She is a graduate of the Leadership Jacksonville Class of 1999 and the Florida Engineering Leadership Institute Class of 2007 and received the Outstanding Tutor of the Year Award in 2000 from Learn to Read Inc. In 2013, she was recognized by the Jacksonville Mayor’s Commission on the Status of Women during Women’s History Month for her mentoring and engineering achievements.
