Chappo MCX Marine Mart

Camp Pendleton, California

Camp Pendleton invests in new amenities for service members.

Haskell completed the new 12,850-square-foot Chappo MCX Marine Mart on a portion of the existing military base transportation lot in Camp Pendleton, California. Visitors to the mart can take advantage of a range of necessities such as ready-made and made-to-order food, coffee service, drinks, snacks, toiletries, cleaning products and essential uniform items.

The new Marine Mart provides convenience for large resident and commuter populations.

Close to 40,000 military family members live on base at Camp Pendleton. During the day, the population on base can reach 100,000 military and civilian personnel. Many times, those on base leave to visit local communities to shop or grab a meal. Such trips are no longer necessary, since the new Chappo MCX Marine Mart offers a variety of convenient on-base amenities.

Careful coordination was required in such a high-traffic location.

The project site sat on Camp Pendleton’s main thoroughfare, Vandergift Boulevard, and was adjacent to an existing fuel station and McDonald’s. During construction, traffic was rerouted to shut down the exit lane for utility work, and multiple lane closures were needed for construction near the drive lanes and utility work under Vandergrift Boulevard. The client also expanded the scope to realign the McDonald’s entry and resurface the existing asphalt. Limited laydown area, parking and materials storage were also a factor in project planning. Given the busy, tight project site, Haskell executed an above-average level of coordination with extensive efforts devoted to ensuring on-site construction activities allowed the base to operate with minimal disturbance.

Sustainability by Design

  • Utilizing energy efficient and sustainable design and construction methods, features and materials
  • Preserving energy, water, land, and materials resources
  • Creating an efficient facility with a long and cost-effective life cycle
  • Implementing low impact development (LID) for the storm water management reducing storm water runoff quantity and improving the quality by removing pollutants
  • Selecting prefinished aluminum storefront/alumium windows and storefront doors with thermal resistance
  • Controlling solar heat gain with insulated glazing and Low-E Energy-Star rating coating
  • Metering of water and power for the retail space as well as tenant spaces
  • Utilizing high efficieny cooling with condensing furnaces to reduce annual energy costs of 30% better than California Energy Code.
