A global e-tailer’s strategy demanded efficient East Coast cargo transfer operations.
When an American multinational e-commerce company sought to establish cargo operations at BWI Marshall Airport it wasn’t a normal build-out. The rental facility would establish their new transfer station standard going forward. Not only would the project need to be complete in just over a year, it needed to be operational before the busy holiday season. The facility owner, Aviation Facilities Company, had previous project experience with Haskell and knew they’d be the ideal fit for the complex project.
Haskell met a multitude of project changes with tight flexibility that ensured delivery.
Using progressive design-build and Building Information Modeling (BIM), Haskell designed and built the 200,000-square-foot structure utilizing efficient tilt-up panel design and a clear span interior that could accommodate the current tenant plus future tenants should they vacate. The facility, with a surrounding 450,000-square-foot concrete apron that could accommodate seven aircraft at once, boasted 87 truck doors, 53 dock pits and equipment, extensive conveying, sorting equipment and platforms, administrative and employee areas, and building systems including fire, telecommunications and security.
Progressive design-build and laser-focused management delivered the facility earlier than promised.
Haskell provided complete A/E design, construction project management, and self-performance of all concrete foundations, slab on grade, tilt-wall panel fabrication and erection, trench drain and retaining walls and ramps. Haskell Steel provided the joist, panel embeds, trench drain grating, metal stairs, canopy steel and miscellaneous steel for this project. A series of delays forced concrete work into winter, but Haskell worked successfully through a challenging season to keep the project on schedule. With each obstacle, the team was able to analyze the impacts, readjust their focus, implement a new plan and keep the project moving. This ultimately led to hitting all the project milestones on time, allowing the tenant to operate the facility in time for the holidays.
