Haskell continues to garner recognition for its work on the Fort Macon Multi-Mission Building (MMB) in Atlantic Beach, North Carolina.

Recognized in February as a Pyramid Award winner in the 2025 Excellence in Construction (EIC) Awards presented by Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC), the project in April received an Excellence Award from the Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA) Southeast Chapter during the DBIA Southeast Regional Summit & Awards Banquet in Asheville.

The EIC Awards recognized 96 of the nation’s top construction projects from 2024, celebrating exceptional performance in leadership, safety, innovation and inclusion. The DBIA award recognized successful application of design-build principles, including interdisciplinary collaboration, acceptance of single-entity risk and a strong track record of on-time, on-budget, litigation-free delivery – hallmarks of Haskell’s integrated approach.

“This is a great honor, and I think it was chosen because it’s such a purpose-driven project,” said Matt Ferguson, Haskell Federal Market Leader. “It consolidated facilities for the Coast Guard and replaced several that were damaged by Hurricane Florence, so it was designed and built for a variety of uses.”

Haskell self-performed 100% of the facility’s design and engineering and subcontracted Haskell Steel for the fabrication of structural steel for the project.

“It was a very collaborative project,” Ferguson added. “At the ribbon cutting, Captain Neal Armstrong, Commanding Officer of the FDCC (Facilities Design & Construction Center), personally thanked us for the professionalism, the quality of the design and construction and the significance of delivering a consolidated facility that supports the Coast Guard’s mission.”

A panel of industry experts served as judges for the ABC competition. Representatives included leaders from organizations including Dick’s Sporting Goods, the Design-Build Institute of America, Engineering News-Record, the Construction Owners Association of America, the National Institutes of Health, the National Institute of Building Sciences, the Smithsonian Institution and others across the construction sector.

“This project is the epitome of excellence, demonstrating quality, health, safety and innovation in our industry,” said 2025 Chair of the ABC National Board of Directors David Pugh, partner at Bradley, Birmingham, Alabama. “The teams at Haskell are the best of the best in merit shop construction. Fort Macon is an industry-leading construction project, showing how members of ABC build projects safely, on time and on budget.”

Providing employee benefits and a suite of construction-specific employer services exclusively for ABC members for 65 years, the ABC Insurance Trust is the proud program sponsor of the Excellence in Construction Awards.

Celebrating its 75th anniversary in 2025, Associated Builders and Contractors is a national construction industry trade association established in 1950 that represents more than 23,000 members. Founded on the merit shop philosophy, ABC and its 67 chapters help members develop people, win work and deliver that work safely, ethically and profitably for the betterment of the communities in which ABC and its members work.
