When the City of Miami set out to build a world-class performing arts center in the heart of Downtown, they needed a partner who could navigate the busy urban core. Haskell, as part of a joint venture with Odebrecht Construction and EllisDon Construction, delivered a building that was technically precise and architecturally ambitious.

The Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts spans two independent structures over $365 million in construction value. The Ballet and Opera House occupies 298,000 square feet and houses two theaters, production and backstage spaces, a cafe, banquet rooms, rehearsal spaces, lounges and administrative offices. The 198,000 SF Concert Hall features a 2,200-seat performance center alongside classrooms and a grand lobby. An elevated pedestrian bridge spanning Biscayne Boulevard connects the two buildings.

Haskell evaluated the constructability of an architecturally ambitious project.

The City of Miami and design partners Cesar Pelli Associates set their architectural ambitions high. Haskell’s role extended beyond construction, requiring close collaboration with the design and stakeholder team to coordinate drawings within the County’s established budget. Reconciling a complex architectural vision with practical fiscal constraints demanded disciplined communication that proposed constructable solutions without compromising high-quality finishes.

Performance halls are logistically and technically challenging.

Building any kind of concert space requires careful soundproofing decisions. Nowhere was this more true than in Miami’s bustling urban core. Every wall of the Adrienne Arsht Center had to meet strict structural, mechanical and acoustic standards. The numerous joint-venture partners and subcontractors across this project meant those expectations had to be clearly communicated, agreed upon and managed. Cohesion between two separate builds now makes for a seamless performance experience.

The Adrienne Arsht Center draws world-class productions and Miami-Dade residents from all over the county. The effort invested in the performing arts hall was just as collaborative and diverse as the shows it exhibits to this day.
