Women in Construction Week is celebrated annually during the first full week of March, focusing on the initiatives and work of women in the industry and highlighting opportunities.

This year, Haskell.com marks the occasion by posing career- and industry-related questions to a group of women who are instrumental in leading multimillion-dollar projects in its Consumer Packaged Goods and Infrastructure & Transportation delivery groups. Headlined by its Haskell Together initiative, the company counts Expanding Diversity & Inclusion as one of its strategic pillars.

The history of Women in Construction Week is linked with that of the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC). Founded in 1953 in Fort Worth, Texas, by 16 women, the NAWIC now comprises more than 115 chapters across the country.

This year’s theme, “Envision Equity,” is aimed at raising awareness of the wide range of roles women play in the industry.

While women account for only 10.9% of the construction workforce, a 2021 survey of more than 700 women in construction conducted by the NAWIC and Safe Site Check found that 71% of respondents believed that opportunities in the field are increasing.

“Now is a great time for women to work in construction,” said Crissy Ingram, executive director, NAWIC. “There are more job opportunities across a variety of professional, trade and administration fields and the gender pay gap is significantly smaller. On average, women in construction earn 99.1 percent of their male colleagues.”
