Living the Values: Mary Redenius Builds in and Beyond the Office
A willingness to adapt, support others and keep learning earned Mary Redenius a Living the Values Award. See how she puts Haskell’s values into practice.
Mary Redenius likes a challenge. As a Design Associate in Transportation Structural Engineering, she faces them with determination.
“I like to say I’m horrible at math, which may be odd for an engineer to say,” said Redenius, a Jacksonville native and Florida State University graduate. “In high school and college, I found that math is not an easy subject. But it really teaches that you can’t just do it the easy way. The thing that really interested me in engineering was how the world moves.”
Redenius and her team have literally contributed to making the world move as Haskell has functioned as the primary design-builder on the $57-million West Riverwalk Extension Project in Tampa, Fla. The project, expected to be completed in spring 2027, is a major expansion of Tampa’s multimodal network from West Tampa to East Tampa and into downtown.
The project includes constructing two new 15-foot-wide pedestrian bridges over the Hillsborough River. Redenius and her team had to learn new codes and manuals for pedestrian loads that differed from the vehicle bridges to which they were accustomed.
“From beginning to end, for a couple of years, it has been a very challenging project design-wise,” Redenius said. “Things were changing constantly. It was really interesting to learn about being as adaptive as the project dictated.”
Redenius’s effort and attitude has earned her the Living the Values Award, given to Haskell team members who exemplify Haskell’s core values of Team, Excellence, Service and Trust.
“Mary is a cornerstone of the Transportation Structural team, known for her dependable ‘I gotcha’ attitude and willingness to step in wherever support is needed,” Senior Civil Engineer Oliver Shahbazian wrote in nominating her for the award. “Whether assisting with design tasks, quality checks, submittals or urgent project needs, she strengthens team cohesion and helps ensure others feel supported.”
Redenius reacted humbly.
“I sometimes don’t reflect on all the work I have done, so it is nice to be recognized for that,” she said. “I am thankful for my team to make me a better person, more well-rounded.”
That outlook isn’t confined to the office. She plays pickleball and founded a running club with other Haskell team members that participates in road races around Jacksonville. Despite finding math challenging in school, she now volunteers with MATHCOUNTS, a nationwide organization that hosts student math competitions.
She’s also the co-president of Jacksonville Engineering Societies Together, a professional development organization for engineers, the Events Committee Chair for the Jacksonville branch of the American Society for Civil Engineers and participates in other outreach efforts that support students, charitable causes and the civil engineering profession.
“At the beginning, I was really scared to network outside of work with co-workers and one day I was just like, ‘I should just go and do it,’” Redenius said. “Doing that opened so many doors that I now feel more a part of the entire engineering world.”
