Haskell teamed with a Mexican development partner to design and build a greenfield carbon-fiber parts manufacturing facility.
As it has on numerous successful projects over the years, Haskell teamed with Grupo Nelson, a Mexican family business dedicated to the development of industrial and commercial projects, to serve as the design-builder for Shimtech Industries’ new carbon-fiber parts manufacturing facility in Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico. The facility subsequently was acquired by Latécoère, the Toulouse, France-based aircraft manufacturer founded by the aeronautics pioneer Pierre-Georges Latécoère in 1917.
The team’s goal was efficient development and a competitive arrangement for the international parts supplier.
The Nelson-Haskell team generated proposal drawings, created a detailed scope narrative, produced a schedule, and developed a competitive leasing proposal that specifically addressed the performance, quality and safety required for the project. The result was a new 75,875-square-foot (SF) facility that features 11,500 SF of office space, a 10,725 SF warehouse electrical and compressor rooms, 13,225 SF of climate-controlled area (CCA) for composite layup, a 23,000SF workroom, 10,000 SF final assembly area, a hazardous materials room, a shipping and receiving office and lounge. Also included were two autoclave rooms of 2,500 SF each, concrete paving (1,650 SF), heavy-duty asphalt paving (16,608 SF) and light-duty asphalt paving (24,823 SF).
Design-build delivery expedited the project’s completion.
The fast-tracked project reached substantial completion in just nine months, enabled significantly by the close Nelson-Haskell partnership. The project met its budget and schedule despite the difficult installation of owner-provided equipment that arrived with measurements differing from those originally provided. The team began placement and assembly two-and-a-half months before completion and finished the building around the equipment.
