For the fourth year in a row and the 19th overall, Haskell Steel has received the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) Safety Award of Honor.

The award is based on work performed without Days Away and Restricted Time injuries (DART) in 2023. Haskell Steel completed a fourth consecutive year with no recordable injuries and, thus, a DART of 0.00.

“It's a proof of everyone’s commitment to safety, every day,” said Touan Plante, Director of Haskell Steel. “Safety is our culture.”

The steel industry is inherently dangerous. The list of hazards includes moving machinery, falls from heights, falling objects, toxic gas, noise, heat and vibration. Haskell Steel accomplished the award-winning performance because of the dedication of its 35-plus Permanent Craft Employees (PCEs) and manufacturing professionals, Plante said.

“We give each team member a challenge to make sure everyone is representative of the culture,” Plante said. “It's this idea that, ‘I own safety.’ Every individual at Haskell Steel owns safety and is accountable to it. We carry that culture universally across the team, and it’s contagious.”

The award comes after a year when Haskell Steel worked about 80,000 hours of production on structural and miscellaneous steel, for projects across the U.S and Caribbean.

AISC Safety Awards are given for perfect records (DART=0), excellent records (0<DART≤1), and commendable records (1<DART≤2). Haskell’s was a DART=0 Award in the Fabricator Category.

"Avoiding accidents is not an accident," said AISC Senior Director of Engineering Tom Schlafly. "Structural steel fabrication shops and construction sites are busy places with many activities occurring simultaneously. Skill, experience, and planning are required to accomplish those activities safely."
