High-stakes expansion: We integrated advanced cleanroom capabilities for a state-of-the-art facility.
Airbus U.S. Space & Defense is at the forefront of the commercial space revolution, manufacturing satellites at its final assembly line in Merritt Island, Florida, located within the Space Coast’s Exploration Park. To support this high-volume, mission-critical satellite production, Haskell was selected to deliver a substantial expansion and renovation project, ensuring the facility meets the most rigorous standards for security, precision and efficiency required for the future of U.S. space development.
Airbus needed business continuity and precision environments for satellite manufacturing.
Haskell delivered a 56,000-square-foot expansion and a comprehensive 30,000-square-foot renovation of the facility. At the core of the expansion are three new specialized SCIF/ISO 8 cleanroom spaces, one of which is a dedicated environmental lab. These rooms, along with their supporting infrastructure, including airlocks, gowning areas, secure data centers, storage and utility rooms, were built to the highest standards of precision and security necessary for integrating and testing the satellite platforms.
A paramount challenge was ensuring the integrity of the existing cleanroom throughout the construction. The project’s success was a testament to the design and construction teams’ collaboration and synergy. They devised a non-disruptive, detailed, multi-phase build plan that allowed the existing facility to remain fully operational throughout.
This complex undertaking, executed under an accelerated 6×10 work schedule, again demonstrates Haskell’s track record for successfully handling highly complex, mission-critical construction required by industry leaders like Airbus to deliver on their ambitious goals.
