Design-build delivery met AT&T’s urgent demand for a new headquarters.
AT&T selected Haskell to design and build its American Transtech Corporate Headquarters on a highly compressed timeline. The challenge was to deliver a new computer center and office complex from concept to completion in only 11 months. By overlapping design and construction functions and leveraging its integrated delivery model, Haskell successfully delivered the project on schedule, providing AT&T with a mission-critical facility that met its operational and budget requirements.
The fast-tracked approach met a monumental challenge in record time.
At the start of the project, Haskell implemented an aggressive fast-track strategy. Long-lead equipment, such as chillers, cooling towers and 26 kV switchgear, was procured early, ensuring availability during critical phases. In-house steel fabrication and precast concrete capabilities allowed rapid production and accelerated schedules. Steel was ordered and fabricated within a month, with construction beginning just four weeks later.
Innovative design features supported efficiency and energy conservation.
The headquarters incorporated forward-thinking features for flexibility and sustainability. In-floor ducts provided streamlined delivery of power, phone and data to workstations and computer systems, supporting the client’s growing technological needs. A heat-recovery system captured and recycled computer-generated heat for reuse in occupied spaces, reducing energy demand. The 27-acre site featured a five-acre lake and provided parking for 1,450 employees, creating a campus environment that supported both functionality and employee experience.
Mission-critical systems ensured reliable operations.
Eight months after project kickoff, AT&T took occupancy of the initial building, which housed the computer room, tape vault, form storage, warehouse, shipping and receiving areas and a robust mechanical and electrical plant. The facility delivered 2,000 tons of air conditioning, 7,500 kVA of electrical capacity and a 1,500 kVA uninterruptible power supply system. These systems ensured reliable operations for AT&T’s mission-critical computing needs. The remaining project scope was completed three months later, meeting the 11-month target.
