Constellation Boxed Wine Manufacturing

Haskell applied its EPC delivery model to create a new bag-in-box wine line for Mission Bell, a Constellation Brand.

We helped a key wine manufacturer keep up with changing trends in packaging.

As the demographics of wine consumers continue to change, wine production continues to adapt and shift from glass bottles to alternative packaging formats. Constellation Brands, Inc. (Constellation) is at the forefront of that trend. Constellation approached Haskell about a challenging engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) project to rapidly increase the winemaker’s bag-in-box production volumes for their popular Mission Bell label. The team was tasked with developing a solution to produce additional capacity in the existing facility as quickly as possible to meet increasing product demands. The aggressive timeline for this project required an expedited design development and procurement strategy.

Utilizing 3D technology helped increase efficiency throughout project development.

This bag-in-box project included a new process and packaging system with a carton erector, bag fillers, laser coders, carton sealer, case packer, shrink wrapper, label applicators, palletizer, stretch wrapper, and finished-wine filtration skid. Haskell developed the entire process and packaging design in 3D to expedite installation and eliminate clashes. Equipment models were coordinated with suppliers to ensure interface details and design criteria were accounted for up front.

Our collaboration with Mission Bell created an efficient bag-in-box wine production system.

The finished line met the aggressive timeline and is capable of consistently exceeding production and efficiency targets. With its compact nature, the design streamlines work centers to ease operations while at the same time maximizing product quality and throughput. By utilizing EPC project delivery, we were able to combine the best knowledge and expertise from our design, construction, and commissioning teams across the Haskell organization. The completed product serves our client as a world-class model for bag-in-box production systems.

  • EPC project for the execution of a new bag-in-box process and packaging system
  • Included all process components from bulk wine tanks, tempering, filtration, filling, and secondary packaging
  • Haskell led the conceptual design, detailed design, execution, startup, and commissioning of all aspects of the project
  • Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) of the new line exceeded 95% over a full 3 shift period and consistently operates above 90% on an ongoing basis
  • The line design was optimized to operate with only two dedicated operators and one fork lift driver
  • Project was completed ahead of scheduled completion date and under budget
