Creating a modern residence hall for a growing student population.
When Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University planned to build a new 264-bed student residence, they knew it would need to accommodate both the region’s freezing nighttime winter temperatures and sunny summer days. With student enrollment growing 40% over the past four years and the demands for affordable housing high, the university needed more housing and on an aggressive schedule.
Haskell created a contemporary enclave that could weather harsh elements.
The structure was built using masonry wall, precast hollow core floor planks and a Gyp-Crete topping. With frequent plunging temperatures, the exterior wall systems were backed by insulated metal panels to create an all-in-one thermal, air and water barrier system. Exceptionally thick R-42 insulation and roof-level snowmelt systems offered additional protection for the three-story, double occupancy structure which also featured suite-style rooms with kitchens, community common areas and an exercise center.
Students were able to occupy residences before the planned completion date.
In less than one year, the project went from award to completion. Haskell helped the owner work through various issues and to find savings when design changes created extra costs. With effective project management, the facility opened on time for the school year despite significant weather-related delays.
