Collins Aerospace Composite Bonding Facility and Expansions

Mexicali, Baja California, Mexico

Collins Aerospace has relied on Haskell throughout its years of transition and growth at its Mexico facility.

In 2009, Collins Aerospace, formerly UTC Aerospace Systems, one of the world’s largest suppliers of aerospace and defense products, sought to establish a presence in Mexico. With its dedicated Aerospace and Aviation Division, Haskell was the perfect Architectural, Engineering and Construction (AEC) partner to undertake the new manufacturing facility located in Mexicali, Baja California.

The facility’s footprint and functionality have grown through four separate projects.

Haskell’s relationship with Collins Aerospace began with the construction of their manufacturing plant for the thrust reversers of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner. Haskell provided engineering, acquisition, and installation of five automated lines, including chemical processing, chemical manufacturing, and insulating treatments. An expansion, which included 14 cranes and three automated elevators, was built to accommodate the manufacture of components. A separate building was constructed for air compressors, boilers, chillers, cooling towers, and electrical equipment needed in the manufacture of carbon-fiber aircraft parts, which required Class 100,000 (ISO 8) cleanroom space.

Collins continues to leverage Haskell’s Design-Build capabilities for total project delivery.

Recently, Haskell has delivered a series of Design-Build projects for another expansion. Foundations for different types of equipment were required, including precision drilling and machining, turbines manufacturing and plate bending and drilling. Two warehouse expansions of more than 50,000 square feet, an office area, an airtight room for sandblasting and a turbine protection paint and drying room were constructed, and the cleanroom was expanded.

  • Design and construction of the 193,000 SF carbon fiber aircraft parts manufacturing facility which includes 90,000 SF of Class 100,000 (ISO 8) clean room space
  • This facility is outfitted with autoclaves, multi-drill equipment, machining centers and ultrasonic scanning tools.
  • Self-performance work included: foundations & slab on grade, structural & miscellaneous steel fabrication.
  • Future expansion was required, consisting of two warehouse expansions for more than 50,000 SF including the expansion of a clean room area.
  • Foundations for different types of equipment including: boiler, precision drilling, turbines manufacturing, plate bending and drilling
  • Expansion of cooling system capacity with the installation of new chiller and UMAs
  • Construction of new office area, airtight sandblasting room, turbine protection paint and drying room
