Jacksonville, FL - The Haskell Company has been awarded a construction management contract to build a one-story expansion to the Emergency Center at Baptist Medical Center South in Jacksonville, Fla. The $8.2 million project also includes renovations to the existing Emergency Center and Patient Admission sections. The addition and renovations will be constructed on the 32-acre Baptist Medical Center South campus, which opened in 2005 and was built by Haskell.
“This expansion will help us meet the needs of our patients and their families, as well as address future growth in our community. It will also help us attract new physicians to Northeast Florida,” said Ron Robinson, FACHE, administrator of Baptist South. “We worked with Haskell on the original construction of this hospital and we look forward to partnering with them once again to create a renovated Emergency Center that will be delivered on time and within budget.”
The new Emergency Center addition will feature more than 20,000 square feet of new construction that will include two pods of nurses’ stations with eight exam rooms each and additional shell space for future growth. The addition is comprised of a pre-cast concrete and steel structure that will have the capacity to add three floors in the future. The project also includes the relocation of the existing Emergency Center entrance and enhancements to the surrounding site. Interior work on the addition will include finishings, plumbing, fire protection, heating-ventilation-air conditioning, electrical system, lighting and corridor tie into the existing facility. “Haskell is honored once again to be of service to Baptist Health and contribute to its mission of providing high-quality, affordable healthcare services to the Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia community,” said Paul Tyler, president of Haskell’s Commercial Group. “The new Emergency Center at Baptist South will add another dimension to the hospital’s services and will allow for future growth as the facility continues to serve the residents of Duval and St. Johns counties.”
Haskell is serving as the builder of the Baptist Medical Center South Emergency Center expansion and Gresham, Smith and Partners is the designer. Baptist Medical Center South originally opened in 2005 as a 92-bed, five-story, 257,000-square-foot, all-digital, acute care community hospital. It was designed to provide state of- the-art health care to the rapidly growing communities of southern Duval and northern St. Johns counties. Since opening, the demand for services at Baptist South has steadily increased, which resulted in the need for a master-planned second tower addition in 2010. Designed by Gresham, Smith and Partners and built by Haskell, the new tower was added immediately adjacent to the existing hospital, which remained fully operational during construction and required special sequencing of the work to ensure the existing hospital operations were not affected by the new construction.
