JACKSONVILLE, FL, APRIL 6, 2010 - The Haskell Company, one of America’s leading design/build firms, has begun construction on 50 apartment homes at Atherton Baptist Homes, a senior residential community located in Alhambra, Calif. Haskell designed the new development, known as The Courtyard, to consist of 50 luxurious, independent living apartments. The Courtyard includes an underground parking structure, which will contain 95 parking spaces. Upon completion, The Courtyard will provide 91,700 square feet of living space in the apartment homes and 37,208 square feet in the parking garage. The total cost for the project is $23 million and was funded by tax-exempt bonds. Construction on The Courtyard is scheduled to be completed in 14 months.
“The Courtyard represents the most ambitious building project in our 96-year history,” said Dr. Dennis E. McFadden, president and CEO of Atherton Baptist Homes. “Both in size and scope, it is simply breathtaking. Our staff and board are united in believing that this is what seniors are calling for in the next generation of retirement living.”
Located on Atherton’s 15-acre campus, The Courtyard’s design incorporates many of the local area’s architectural influences, featuring open breezeways, and an open center courtyard with fountains, pergola and walking paths. The project is comprised of four buildings; three of the four buildings are three-story and the remaining building will be two-story. All units in the Courtyard are designed as single floor units, eliminating the need for residents to worry about multi-floor units. The new development will complement Atherton’s campus amenities, which include an on-site coffee shop, restaurants and dining facilities, beauty salon, indoor swimming pool and spa, fitness center, chapel, game room, workshop, and library.
“We are repositioning Atherton to become an even more attractive, modern senior living community for those who desire an active and engaging place to call home,” said Paul Tyler, president of Haskell’s Commercial Group. “Repositioning a community such as Atherton means really looking at its residents’ needs and wants to design a place that fits their lifestyle today and in the years to come. We have worked closely with the team at Atherton to design just such a facility and I look forward to the end result of our partnership and work.”
Established in 1914, Atherton is a continuing care retirement community, offering four levels of service to seniors 60 and over: residential (independent) living, assisted living, skilled nursing, and companion care, a model that allows women with beginning stages of dementia to live together in a home with 24-hour supervision. The community's goal is to grow with residents and accommodate their changing needs while holding fast to its values of caring and compassion. More information is available at abh.org.
