As job descriptions go, the posting for Haskell’s Director of Project Development in the Water/Wastewater Division describes the requirements and responsibilities of the position pretty well. But there’s more.

“I think the piece that may be missing is the level of excitement that there is for the growth opportunity,” said Bryan Bedell, Haskell Vice President and Water Division Leader. “This person is going to help implement our strategic vision in the Western United States. I'm hire No. 1 for the west, if you will, and this is hire No. 2.

“Being able to bring a specialized company, not a hard-bid contractor, we have the opportunity to bring our services to the Western U.S. There’s a great energy in the Salt Lake City office right now. If I were thinking about what would make the position attractive to me, it would be the opportunity to feel like you’re part of building something that you could put your name on.”

Haskell is moving quickly to convert its Dallas, Texas, and Salt Lake City, Utah, offices to fully functional Regional Operations Centers with all the capabilities of its Jacksonville, Florida, headquarters. The move is vital to the ongoing expansion of its design-build delivery method of its Infrastructure & Transportation Group.

Growing the Water Division in the Western U.S. is an immediate focus, given the urgent need brought on by drought conditions and population growth. Bedell has relocated from Jacksonville to Salt Lake City to extend Haskell’s expertise in integrated project delivery.

“I was at a water and drinking water conference here in Utah last week, and virtually every session I was in talked about the population growth that is projected to happen here in Utah, on the Wasatch front,” Bedell said. “They’re looking at doubling and tripling over just the next 10 to 12 years. There’s a lack of water to support that kind of growth. That’s specific here to Utah, but it’s true for the front range in Denver. It's true for the greater Phoenix area. Pick a city in the west, they're all the same place right now. Nobody has enough water and there are a lot more people coming.”

Haskell’s design-build and construction manager at risk (CMAR) delivery methods are uniquely capable of expediting critical projects by eliminating gaps between the architectural, engineering and construction (AEC) disciplines.

Those in Haskell’s Director of Project Development positions play a critical role in the integrated delivery model pioneered by founder Preston Haskell III in the mid-1960s.

The successful candidate will use exceptional leadership and communication skills to guide project teams and clients through initial contact and engagement, proposal development, scheduling, cost estimating, construction, project progress and, ultimately, commissioning.

“Some will say it's our most important position,” Bedell said. “When you think about the model that Preston came up with almost 60 years ago, when you think about a single point of accountability for all things design- and construction-related, the entirety of that model goes through the new director.”

Perhaps most important to the role is the ability to build and maintain strong, collaborative relationships. Haskell has grown to nearly $1.2 billion in revenue with more than 1,850 team members and more than 100 positions available. Throughout that exponential growth, though, it has stayed true to its core values of Team, Excellence, Service and Trust, building and maintaining relationships such that 80 percent of its business is with return clients.

“We need someone who can develop projects, bring them into fruition, help do the business development activities on the front end and, upon award, stay involved with the project in that cradle-to-grave mentality, that seller-doer mentality, where they'll continue to be involved throughout the entire life of the project, helping to maintain relationships that last.”

Of course, compensation and culture are key to any employment opportunity. And in this case, again, the job description is on-point, saying, “At Haskell, We Create Things That Matter and have prioritized our team member experience. One of our company pillars is to “Provide Team Members the BEST Job of Their Lives,” and we manifest that in a variety of ways. Our Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) creates stock ownership for our full-time team members. As an employee-owned company with an ownership culture, we work together for the benefit of our clients and each other.”
